The Scuttlebutt Featuring Articles About WEHO Sales Rise While Others Decline, Minnesota Takes More Steps Towards Adult-Use Cannabis and More
In the days of the Armada, a fleet of warships, the scuttlebutt was the rumor or gossip that would spread throughout the ship. Today, Armada Law Corp presents The Scuttlebutt, a daily summery of news articles that people within the cannabis, hemp and plant medicine industries are chatting about along with links to the full articles.
In today’s news:
#californiacannabis – “According to Emerald Village West Hollywood, the city collected $1.5 million in taxes from adult-use cannabis sales in 2021, which increased to $1.9 million in 2022. Meanwhile, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, and California, the four oldest legal adult-use cannabis markets, all saw a decline in tax revenue from cannabis sales ranging from 7.7% to 21%, as reported by Emerald Village.
The association stated that West Hollywood generated almost three times more revenue from cannabis per resident than Los Angeles, with $704 per resident in adult-use cannabis in WeHo, compared to $250 per resident in Los Angeles. Scott Schmidt, the executive director of Emerald Village West Hollywood, attributed the popularity of cannabis sales to the city’s welcoming environment and approach to cannabis culture, adding that “Our city is committed to creating safe and welcoming environments for cannabis enthusiasts and industry professionals alike, and the revenue trends show that our approach to embracing cannabis culture is working.””

#californiacannabis – “Not everyone is happy about Glass House’s success. Its massive scale has allowed it to sell cheaper cannabis and has earned the company nicknames like the “Walmart of weed.” Social media is filled with angry cannabis industry members claiming its “corporate greed” is what’s wrong with California’s industry.
The huge farm is also built on what some critics call a “broken promise.” California had originally planned on delaying farm licenses until 2023 to give small farms a head start, but a last-minute change in 2017 allowed farms to grow infinitely larger. Glass House is one of the many companies that have taken advantage of these rules.”

#cannabispolitics – “The Minnesota Senate cast its first vote to legalize recreational marijuana Friday, pushing the proposal closer to becoming law than ever before.
Senators passed the DFL-led marijuana bill on a 34-33 vote, with all Democrats voting for it and all Republicans opposed. The House approved its marijuana bill Tuesday. The bills now head to a conference committee where their differences must be reconciled in a final version.”

#Psychedelics – “In a new paper published in
Science titled “
Pressing regulatory challenges for psychedelic medicine,” the authors propose solutions to three regulatory challenges in the psychedelic field that will occur as the FDA approves psychedelics for medicinal use. The authors are part of Baylor University’s Ethical Legal Implications of Psychedelics in Society (
ELIPSIS) program and the Project on Psychedelics Law and Regulation (
POPLAR), aimed to address the ethical and policy issues surrounding psychedelic medicine.”

#cannabispolitics – “Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan is in hot water, with Republican lawmakers calling for her resignation and the Democratic governor seeking investigations because Fagan took a consulting job with a marijuana firm.
The matter came to a head Friday after Fagan’s office released an audit of the state’s marijuana regulators, the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission. The audit called for the OLCC to “reform” some rules for marijuana businesses, saying they are “burdens” when combined with federal restrictions on interstate commerce, banking and taxation.
Fagan, a Democrat, recused herself from the audit because she is a paid consultant of an affiliate of marijuana retail chain La Mota, Fagan’s spokesman Ben Morris said at a virtual news conference about the audit’s release.”

#psychedelics – “Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers continue their exploration into psychedelics and how these drugs may produce a wide range of profound changes in perception, cognition and mood. In a recent study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, experts from the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research explored belief changes related to psychedelic experiences. They found that a single psychedelic experience increased a range of nonphysicalist beliefs as well as beliefs about consciousness, meaning and purpose. Further, the magnitude of belief changes was associated with qualitative features of the experience.”
