In the days of the Armada, a fleet of warships, the scuttlebutt was the rumor or gossip that would spread throughout the ship. Today, Armada Law Corp presents The Scuttlebutt, a daily summery of news articles that people within the cannabis, hemp and plant medicine industries are chatting about along with links to the full articles.
In today’s news:
#californiacannabis – “To encourage more local governments to host cannabis retailers, the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) announced Feb. 14 that it has launched a Local Jurisdiction Retail Access Grant to provide cities and counties with the resources to develop and implement licensing programs for dispensaries.
The grant program will prioritize areas where national surveys reveal high cannabis consumption rates but where there is little to no access to retail outlets, and will also prioritize local licensing programs that support equity operators and use existing licensing practices.”
#psychedelicresearch – “In a paper published Feb. 17 in Science, researchers at the University of California, Davis show that engaging serotonin 2A receptors inside neurons promotes growth of new connections but engaging the same receptor on the surface of nerve cells does not.
The findings will help guide efforts to discover new drugs for depression, PTSD and other disorders, said senior author David E. Olson, associate professor of chemistry, biochemistry and molecular medicine and director of the Institute for Psychedelics and Neurotherapeutics at UC Davis.
Drugs such as LSD, MDMA and psilocybin show great promise for treating a wide range of mental disorders that are characterized by a loss of neural connections. In laboratory studies, a single dose of these drugs can cause rapid growth of new dendrites — branches — from nerve cells, and formation of new spines on those dendrites.”
#californiacannabis – “On Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Department of Cannabis Control served a search warrant at a warehouse at 2427 Fourth St., where they seized 22,600 cannabis plants worth $18.6 million and 244 pounds of cannabis flower worth about $400,000.
The warehouse, previously home to a sheetmetal company called Graysix Co., was “heavily fortified,” according to David Hafner, a spokesperson for the Department of Cannabis Control.
The Department of Cannabis Control, created by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2021, led the operation, joined by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California National Guard, the Berkeley Police Department and Berkeley Code Enforcement. The raid was first reported by the Berkeley Scanner.”

#cannabisindustry – “A illicit cannabis store across the street from New York’s City Hall was fined $50,000 and had one of its workers arrested by local law enforcement this week for selling cannabis to a minor, according to the New York Post .
Jungle Boys, at 253 Broadway, was the location of the shop that was fined, New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda told the Post after his agency conducted a site inspection on Saturday and issued the fine. Miranda said his office would be checking on the location in the future, ostensibly to ensure the shop doesn’t reopen….
The shop is not connected to the successful and legal California brand Jungle Boys, which runs licensed marijuana shops in Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego, as well as in Florida.”

#californiacannabis – “San Diego was awarded more than $880,000 on Thursday by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Office of Business and Economic Development to “promote equity” in the local cannabis industry.
According to the state, the money is intended to support residents seeking to enter the legal cannabis industry in the city through funding grants to cover permit and license fees and associated startup property costs while providing access to the cannabis industry workforce.”
