The Scuttlebutt Featuring Articles About Humboldt County Proposes To Revamp Cannabis Cultivation, Nevada County Proposes Changes To Cannabis Taxes and More
In the days of the Armada, a fleet of warships, the scuttlebutt was the rumor or gossip that would spread throughout the ship. Today, Armada Law Corp presents The Scuttlebutt, a daily summery of news articles that people within the cannabis, hemp and plant medicine industries are chatting about along with links to the full articles.
In today’s news:
#californiacannabis – “Proponents of the Humboldt Cannabis Reform Initiative are standing by their proposal that would overhaul the county’s cultivation regulations if passed by voters next year, saying the county’s analysis of the measure is “packed with factual errors, untruths and distortions.”
A county staff report on the 38-page initiative presented to the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors last month warned it would have “dire consequences” for the industry, saying that in addition to capping the number and size of new cannabis farms in the county, it would also immediately render 400 of the county’s permitted farms “non-conforming.” Due to ambiguities in the initiative’s language, staff also posited the initiative could then prevent these already permitted farms from making environmental improvements — like adding solar arrays or increasing water storage — and obtaining non-cultivation permits that would allow for tourism or processing on site.”

#californiacannabis – “The proposed change would be to tax according to the square footage of a cannabis grow instead of the current method of taxing 2.5% of gross receipts after cannabis sales are made, according to Tina Vernon, Nevada County Treasurer & Tax Collector.
“Since January 1, 2019, the Tax Collector has collected over $1M in Cannabis taxes from approximately 200 legal cannabis businesses,” according to the staff report prepared by Vernon.”

#psychedelics – “Treatment with psilocybin therapy resulted in clinically meaningful and long-lasting improvements in depression symptoms over 8 weeks following a single treatment of psilocybin therapy combined with group therapy support, according to data from a phase 2 study published in JAMA Oncology.
Results indicated that treatment with psilocybin resulted in a notable reduction from baseline to week 8 post-treatment in Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) score of 19.1 points (95% CI, –22.3 to –16.0; P <.001). Eighty percent of patients experienced a sustained response, and 50% of patients achieved full remission of depressive symptoms.”

#cannabislawsuit – “According to the suit, Henson was involved in a two-person accident while driving a company vehicle on November 16, 2021. No one was injured, and the other employee involved in the accident admitted fault, the suit said. Afterward, Daimler told Henson he would have to undergo a drug test as part of company policy, even though Henson was not under the influence at the time of the accident and was not suspected of being so by anyone at the company.
Henson then informed his supervisor that he had recreationally used cannabis a couple of weeks before, but was forced to take the test or be fired. The test came back positive, and Henson was suspended without pay, the suit said.
According to the suit, Henson later found out about the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory, Enforcement Assistance and Marketplace Modernization Act, which prohibits adverse action against an employee based “solely” on the presence of cannabinoid metabolites. Henson informed Daimler that his suspension may have broken the law, but in January 2022, he was notified that he had been terminated. He filed suit against the company later that year.”
